Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8607 was constructed in December of 1955, while #8610 was built one month later. Note the passenger-service air hoses just to the right of the coupler. Partially visible in the right background are portions of Juniata's 17th Street Bridge and the East Altoona Roundhouse. |

Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8607, #8610, and an A-A set of GM-EMD EP-22's whose road numbers are not recorded. #8607 and #8610 are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8607 was constructed in December of 1956, while #8610 was built in January of 1957. In this context, they're pulling a passenger train that's just leaving the Altoona Station and heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the ALCo's will uncouple and return to this location and await another helper run up "The Mountain." In this context, they're serving as "pusher" locomotives for a mail-express train that's passing through the Gallitzin Tunnel; in a matter of minutes, though, they'll uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." |

17th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 April 1964. On the right (L to R) are PRR engines #5877 and #5876. Both are EP-20's built by EMD in 1949 and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. They are about to stop at the Altoona Station with a nine-car passenger train on its way to Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and New York City. On the left (L to R) are PRR engines #8608 and #8607. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower each.
