The Central valley is Californias main rail artery between the San Francisco Bay Area, the Sacramento Area, and the Los Angeles Area. BNSF and Union Pacific operate parallel mainlines through this area. Amtraks San Joaquin service uses both mainlines between Sacramento, Oakland, and Bakersfield. From Sacramento, the UP main heads almost due south, through Elk Grove and Lodi, to Stockton. In Stockton, the BNSF Stockton Sub crosses the UP at grade. The BNSF swings southeast, while the UP continues south to Lathrop, where it also turns southeast. Both mains serve Modesto, Turlock, Merced, and Madera, before crossing again at Fresno. Major yards include Roseville Yard (Sacramento), Stockton (UP and BNSF), and Fresno (BNSF). This map was created by OpenRailwayMap.org. |
