NS was not shy about putting top of the line power on locals and switch jobs. Where CR was using GP 38s and B23s on their locals, and later GP 40s, NS almost always had C40-8s assigned. It was fun watching a six axle GE working the Agway mill on somewhat shaky rail, or down the Vestal Spur, though they did ultimately do some serious track rehab on it around 2003. Here we have a pair of six axles on H 88, a turn job from Gang Mills to Binghamton, with mostly NYSW interchange. The leader is one of the thousand C40's on NS, but the trailing unit is an almost new SD70M-2, a unit youd more typically expect on 206. |
