Horseshoe Curve-1966. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in mid-May of 1966. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8613 and #8657. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8613 is an AS-24M built in August of 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower, while 8657 is an AS-18AM built in December of 1957 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. They're powering one hopper car and an N-5 cabin car around the Curve and up the Alleghenies to Gallitzin and points West. |
