Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8798 and another GP-7 whose number is not recorded. #8798 is an ES-15M road switcher built by GM-EMD in January of 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. They are parked under the WWII-era coaling tipple, awaiting their next helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. Behind them are various passenger cars awaiting reconditioning in the Passenger Car Shops beyond them. |

Niles I. Here is the fourth of 11 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8798 and #8507. Both are ES-15M road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #8798 was built in January of 1952, while #8507 is was built in August of 1952. They are serving as helpers for a mail and express train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they will uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper run up "The Mountain." Also visible is PRR/Railway Express Service cabin car #5010. |
