SP 4-8-8-2 #4220 - Southern Pacific |
Description: |
Here is the unique cab forward 4-8-8-2 #4220 built By Baldwin in April of 1942. The design was to protect the crew from choaking smoke fumes experienced in traditional steam loco arrangements during the passage through 39 long tunnels and numerous snow sheds. In essence the loco was "running in reverse" but built with the cab in front with a window. Unfortunately, the loco only served SP for 17 years before being "vacated" (retired) in September of 1957 at Roseville, CA and eventually sold for scrap in April fo 1959. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo. |
