Album Info:Here are several original photos of Pennsylvania Railroad subjects by Mr. Douglas C. Jones that were taken in and about Altoona, Pennsylvania, circa 1953. They are organized according to location: from the 24th Street Turntable in the West to the Erecting & Machine Shop in the East. The actual order of succession is not recorded. All of these images come from negatives I purchased during several eBay auctions conducted by Mr. Jeffrey K. Frangione in May, June, and July of 2021.

Shown here is the front end of Pennsylvania Railroad engine #646, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during March of 1918 and retired in November of 1957 after 39 years of faithful service. In this context, it's on the Turntable having just returned to Altoona from a passenger helper run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin where it uncoupled and returned here, to be turned around, for yet another run up "The Mountain."

The twin smokestacks at the right mark the location of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops.

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6168, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during September of 1944 and retired in October of 1957 after just 13 years of revenue service. In this context, it's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train out of the Classification Yard and will soon climb the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.
