SP tunnel motors in Minnesota
Title:  SP tunnel motors in Minnesota
Description:  I believe this was an experiment by BN to see how this particular set of engines handled tunnels out west. They were on an eastbound coal train heading towards LaCrosse when I got some pictures of them at Oakland Tower on the south end of BNs Daytons Bluff Yard.

The little SWs were the only engines allowed on this line in the last 10 years, and the train typically had 10-20 boxcars and flats from Andersen Window.

Railroad Crossing
Title:  Railroad Crossing
Description:  Here is a shot looking north at Duluth Juntion in rural Washington County in the summer of 1980, as the scrappers were up north beginning to remove the 15 mile line. Where I am standing there had been a connecting track between the two lines, as Soo Line had actually run trains on the NP tracks in the early 1900s to Stillwater. The BN ran a 5 day a week local to Stillwater until March, 1982 and the Soo Line quit using this line in about the 1972-74 time frame.

Description:  Like always, things are in transition in the early 1980s as BN has started to reconfigure the old CBQ yard at St. Paul. Yard track 1 is being removed and it looks like the Milwaukee Road is putting some heavy tie replacement in play along their shared Main 2 with the BN.

CNW Belt yard
Title:  CNW Belt yard
Description:  Back in the early 80s alot of track everywhere was looking pretty shaky, and this was one place. The CNW/UP has a small yard near the Mississippi River that is the primary route now to access the old Rock Island main to KC. This is looking south at one of the yard tracks that could use some attention.

70 mph to Hinckley!
Title:  70 mph to Hinckley!
Description:  I am going to close out this album with a shot from my car at 72 mph chasing a one car local going for the quit on the former NP route at Pine City. The Milwaukee Road crews were known for running 60-65 mph on this line(speed limit was 50), but this little Tasmanian Local beat all of them this day! I remember wondering if a cop would be over the next rise in the road as I attempted to chase this train for a few miles and finally gave up as he sped away for the tie up at Hinckley yard, as I tie up my photo journey with you from all these years ago!
