CB&Q Class LO-1B 87329
Title:  CB&Q Class LO-1B 87329
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class LO-1B 87329 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 20, COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner:

Production of Airslide cars began in 1954 and the Q acquired its first 100 of the 2,600 cubic-foot cars from General American in December of that year: Class LO-1's 87000 - 87099. Another 100 nearly identical cars ( but riding on No. 93 roller bearing A-3 Ride Control trucks ) came in 1955, numbered 87100 - 87199 and classed LO-1A. Fifty-two more of the 29-foot long, 2,600 cubic-foot capacity Airslides joined the roster in 1957 as CB&Q Class LO-2 and numbered 87200 - 87251. The next batch of Airslides - 75 more 50 tonners, classed LO-1B and numbered 87300 - 87373 were delivered in 1958, the year the Q adopted its new image, and consequently they came in the new painting/lettering scheme: gray body, black trucks and underbody ( meaning the hopper slope sheets and discharge outlets were now black instead of gray, though the bolsters and draft gear remained gray ), red lettering and a large Scothlite herald. Note the cross stiffener between posts protruding above and below the herald. These cars, like all Q Airslides, had a baked-on enamel lining. Unlike the earlier LO-1 and LO-2 classes which had open bottoms on the outside vertical posts, the LO-1B series posts had closed bottoms. The Class LO-1B's were eventually renumbered into the BN 400800 - 401139 number series.

CB&Q Class LO-2C 87594
Title:  CB&Q Class LO-2C 87594
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class LO-2C 87594 at Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's publication, Burlington Bulletin 20 COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner:

Quite pleased with the performance of the Airslide cars, the Burlington continued to place regular orders for lots of 50 or 60 more of the 2,600 cubic foot cars through the early 1960's. Following to 60 Class LO-2B car of 1960 ( road #'s CB&Q 87500 - 87549 and C&S 800 - 809 ) came 50 LO-2C's in 1961 ( Q 87550 - 87599 ) and 50 LO-2D's in 1962 ( Q 87600 - 87639 and C&S 810 - 819 ). A couple of tiny spotting features differentiate these cars. First, the vibrator brackets of the 1961 cars and all subsequent Airslides are mounted on oval pads somewhat larger than the rectangular pads used on all previous production. Then, on the 1962 cars, the number of rivets employed on the vertical channel braces at the ends of each car side is reduced considerably from previous standard practice; where earlier cars have 26 rivets per channel brace, the 1962 LO-2D's have but 12, and the bottom connection to the side is welded rather than riveted.

CB&Q LO-2E 87727
Title:  CB&Q LO-2E 87727
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class LO-2E 87727 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's publication, Burlington Bulletin 20 COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner: One last batch of 2,600 cubic-foot Airslide cars was purchased by the Burlington in 1965, and by that time, General American had made some noticeable changes in the design. The 50 Class LO-2E cars, Q 87700 - 87749, featured triangular gusset plates with a stamped stiffening rib at the upper end of each side in place of diagonal angle-iron braces previously used at the ends of the cars. And the vertical braces were gone, replaced by hat-section posts. Additionally, due to the use of the triangular gussets, some changes were required in the upper side ladder arrangement.

Title:  CB&Q Class FM-3 94312
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class FM-3 94312 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from the book, CB&Q Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment, by Michael J. Spoor:

In 1956 the Q introduced a new series of 60' 70-ton capacity flatcars designed to carry farm machinery. Built at Havelock ( CB&Q shops in Nebraska ) and classified FM-3, additional batches were delivered throughout the 1960's, resulting in 650 of these machinery flats on the roster by 1967, numbered 94250 - 94649. All had hydraulic cushioning, all-welded construction, and tie-down devices specifically designed for farm implements. Note 42 in the October 1971 ORER reads:

Cars in series 94000 to 94049 ( except cars 94000, 94005, 94013, 94018 94021, 94032, 94039, and 94047 ) are equipped with tie-downs for Caterpillar service; cars in series 94250 to 94649 are equipped with tie-downs for handling automobile components.

RBBQ RBL-5 77165
Title:  RBBQ RBL-5 77165
Description:  RBBQ RBL-5 77165 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q shops in Havelock, Nebraska built 150 insulated boxcars in 1967 numbered RBBQ 77100-77249. When built, they were painted in a forest green and stencilled in the standard Burlington font and the Burlington Route herald was applied to the now blank plate on the right side. This car is stencilled BLT. 6.67 HV, however, it appears it went back to Havelock for repairs as it is also stencilled HV 11-69. At that time, the pre-merger paint scheme was applied, with the intention of painting the word NORTHERN below the word BURLINGTON after the merger was approved. By the time the merger was approved, the font had been changed to a thinner style, which is understandable given the unfortunate spacing of the letters GT in the BURLINGTON on a ribbed car.

Title:  RBBQ Class RBL-5 77175
Description:  RBBQ Class RBL-5 77175 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was stenciled: WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO AGENT CB&Q RR ROCHELLE, ILL. This was one of 150 cars built during July and August 1967 by the CB&Q shops in Havelock, Nebraska, road numbers 77100 - 77249. The differed from the previous batch of RBL class cars in the improved door handle on the Camel plug door, and the lack of roofwalks and full height ladders to reach the roof. The ICC banned the roofwalk and associated ladders on new cars built after January 1, 1967. As a result, the new cars' handbrakes were also positioned low on the end of the car. The herald was also positioned slightly different between the two series of cars.

The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's publication, Burlington Bulletin 20 COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner: The other 50 Airslide cars of 4,180 cubic-foot capacity, classed LO-6B and numbered 87750 - 87799, were built in January 1966 and differed in a number of details from their 1964 and 1965 predecessors. First, though not visible, they were divided internally into two separate compartments. Externally, they had somewhat different vertical end bracing and, consequently, different hand brake mounting arrangements. They were also the only Q Airslides with the registered trade name stenciled on the cars - in the upper left-hand corner.

CB&Q Class HC-1D 182657
Title:  CB&Q Class HC-1D 182657
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class HC-1D 182657 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in March 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was one of 250 cars built between 1940 and 1961 by CB&Q's Havelock, Nebraska shops, rebuilt in 1969, reclassed as HC-1D, and renumbered into the number series 182500 - 182749. The first 200 Class HC-1D cars were painted in light gray ( body ) with black roller bearing trucks, Chinese red lettering, and full-color Scothlite heralds painted on the car sides between posts rather than a larger Scotchlite decal on a metal plate. The second 250 Class HC-1D cars featured a pre-merger paint scheme that eliminated the herald and substituted an all-caps "BURLINGTON" for the previous upper and lower case "Burlington" at the upper left car side. All lettering was red, and a space was left for the word "NORTHERN" to be added once the merger was consummated, but this was never done. The BN opted for black lettering, and the lettering style employed by the Q on all its pre-merger painted cars did not match the Helvetica style ultimately used by the BN. No other Class HC-1's - CB&Q, C&S, or FW&D - ever received this paint scheme.

CB&Q Class LO-10 184757
Title:  CB&Q Class LO-10 184757
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class LO-10 184757 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in March 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was one of 350 Class LO-10 cars built by Pullman-Standard in 1967 ( at the P-S Butler, PA plant ), numbered 184600 - 184949 ( later, BN 457000 - 457349 ). The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 20, COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner: During 1967 and 1968, the largest group of Pullman-Standard covered hoppers joined the Q roster in three separate orders totaling 575 cars. These big 4,740 cubic-foot capacity grain cars were of a new design featuring "high" sides ( actually shallow sides with a deep bottom edge higher than normal ), very deep hoppers with the center sill passing through them, and center discharge outlets. Trough hatches had quickly become standard on grain cars, and these Class LO-10 and LO-10A cars featured lightweight four-section fiberglass loading hatches. Built after the 1967 AAR rule changes regarding non-essential rooftop running boards and the consequent positioning of hand brake wheels, these cars had low-mounted brake wheels. All but 50 of the 575 LO-10's had straight gravity discharge outlets of either the Enterprise or Fabko variety; cars 184925 - 184949 featured Enterprise Gravac vacuum-assisted gravity outlets.
