CNW 1689 short hood end |
Description: |
This ALCo has an interesting history. After "retirement" from the C&NW, it came into private ownership and was leased to the Chicago, Madison and Northern Railroad where it worked the ex-Milwaukee Road branch lines in southwestern Wisconsin (those which survive are now part of the WSOR) in the early 1980s. Then it went to the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad in Ohio (where it was restored to its old "Route of the Streamliners/400" C&NW scheme in the early 2000s, which then faded considerably during several years of outdoor storage) before coming "home" to IRM in 2014. |

WC 7525 paired with 20-cylinder compatriot Santa Fe 92 |
Description: |
The Wisconsin Central Ltd. SD45 was a favorite target of Midwest railfans from the arrival of the first ones in the late '80s until the last few were withdrawn by CN in the mid-2000s. Unfortunately for me I took up railfan-photography just a couple of years too late for them. Most of them came from the BN or Santa Fe, arriving in Cascade Green or Yellow Bonnet before receiving WCL's classy maroon and gold scheme. |

CNW 6847 will trail CB&Q 504 as the replacement power on the "coach train" |
Description: |
After only getting a distant shot of this locomotive's long hood end on my only prior visit to IRM in 2014, I wanted to make sure to get a good look at it this time. Growing up in Madison, WI in the 1990s, the C&NW SD40-2 would have been common power, but the only other one documented in my collection is a photo of 6886 when it led the 1994 Circus World Museum circus train. I'm glad UP donated one to be "de-patched." Its faded and weathered "old yellow" paint probably looks much the same as it did during its last decade or so of service on the "Cheap & Nothing Wasted." |

A foamer from the land o' cheese doesn't have to guess where IRMX 102 came from |
Description: |
This received its red and gray paint to become part of WSOR's all too short-lived A-B-A E9 set. It (along with A unit 103) was sold to Iowa Pacific and made a few appearances on their excursions in the mid-2010s before that outfit went belly-up. Not sure of the exact circumstances, but I'm glad it was "rescued" by IRM. |

Description: |
My wife and I would soon get on board and take the ride out and back on IRM's short stretch of preserved Elgin & Belvidere Electric trackage. This ended up being the only trip we had time for this day, as it was a cool day for mid-August and she needed to go to the car and warm up (despite having one of my hoodies!). |

Johnson Siding, located just west of Seeman Road (the only public grade crossing on the regularly used part of IRM's restored section of Elgin & Belvidere Electric right-of-way) allows for trains to meet. What they really need is a run-around siding on the east end so that trains don't have to shove back to the depot! |

UP 1848 shoves the caboose train into the loop for boarding at the Depot Street platform |
Description: |
IRM's main depot, "East Union" (apparently named because IRM is east of the town of Union proper, it is actually toward the west end of the museum property) is visible to the right. It is the original Galena & Chicago Union R.R. Marengo depot from 1851. The G&CU became part of the C&NW, and the line now belongs to Union Pacific and runs parallel to and just north of IRM's line for freight service to Belvidere and Rockford. |

WC 7525 long hood with its Operation Lifesaver graphic |
Description: |
While it was nice that this one was preserved, I almost would have preferred one in the "typical" WC SD45 scheme. A few went to the DMV&W, but have been repainted into their orange and gray scheme. A handful of others "survived" for years in the vast diesel boneyard at NRE Silvis, but with the recent changes to that operation their future is likely bleak (if any even do survive as of August, 2022). |

It was great seeing all the classic EMDs, ALCos and GEs in action for Diesel Days, but it would have been nice to see engines like this (or the pair of ALCo roadswitchers they replaced on this train) with a "photo freight" of rolling stock of the type they would have handled from the 1960s through the '80s. |

UP 18, the gigantic gas turbine-electric set, on display |
Description: |
These monstrous 8,500 HP two-unit sets, with twelve powered axles (plus fuel tender) fit right in with UP's penchant for Brobdingnagian motive power exemplified by the Big Boy, EMD DDA40X, and others. It is one of two preserved (the other is No. 26 in Utah) out of a class of 30 built. They had relatively short careers from 1955-December 1969, issues with fuel economy (the Bunker C oil they burned initially being significantly cheaper than diesel lost that advantage) and wear and tear on the turbine blades; as well as improvements in diesel-electric power rendered them obsolete. |

MILW 760 on the south end of the lineup |
Description: |
This is another locomotive in IRM's collection that at last check was operational, but wasn't running for Diesel Days 2022, to my disappointment. It is the first of what became many H10-44 and H12-44 switcher units built by Fairbanks-Morse at their Beloit plant. The nearby Midwestern railroads were some of the biggest buyers; these were quite common on the Milwaukee Road and C&NW until the late '70s. Sister 781 is preserved outside the depot museum in Brodhead, WI. |

Armco Steel E-110 |
Description: |
A rare example of a Lima diesel locomotive, built in 1951. Lima-Hamilton produced only 175 total from 1949 to '51, when it merged with Baldwin and their line was discontinued in favor of Baldwin's, which would exit the locomotive market in 1956. The transition era proved to be the death knell for the old steam builders; ALCo did better than most but ultimately exited the U.S. locomotive market in 1969. |

GTW 8380 in just about "scrapyard found" condition (other than the bell, headlight and numberboards) |
Description: |
Through an ironic twist of fate; the unstylish, workaday Baldwin-built GTW P-5 class eight wheel yard goat became very well represented in preservation when Northwestern Steel & Wire of Sterling, IL donated their twelve examples (which they had purchased as scrap but used as switchers until the early 1980s, becoming one of the very last places in the United States where steam locomotives could be found operating on a daily basis) to IRM. However, due to lack of need for so many of the same class they had difficulty finding homes for all of them. Three were shoved aside on a spur track in the nearby town of Galt and left to rot until 2008, when two of them were finally moved for preservation. As of 2022 one (8305) still remains there. At one point it was supposedly going to Quincy, IL for display but heavy overgrowth and continued deterioration make it ever more unlikely that it will be able to be saved with each passing year. |

CRIP 4506 about to cross the "diamond to nowhere" |
Description: |
The track going right to left across the bottom of the picture stub-ends about a foot beyond the diamond crossing with the track that 4506 is on. It serves as a headroom track for switching the shop buildings. |

CRIP 4506 going for one last spin around the shops area for Diesel Days 2022 |
Description: |
This locomotive was used by the Chicago and Northwestern, and languished in the ex-C&NW yard at Janesville, WI for many years after the UP takeover. It arrived at IRM in 2008 still as CNW 4160 and was quickly repaired to operating condition; and restored to its Rock Island appearance a few years later. |

A face only a mother could love |
Description: |
It didn't pull crack passenger trains...it wasn't exceptionally powerful, innovative or otherwise significant...but because Northwestern Steel & Wire of Sterling, IL kept using them as switchers until the early 1980s, twelve of these 0-8-0s survive in preservation (well really only 11, since poor 8305 is probably doomed to rust down to dust by this point) while many classes of mighty 4-8-4s or streamlined Hudsons, Pacifics, and Atlantics are lost to history. |

Old No. 1630 gets a rare summer weekend off for Diesel Days |
Description: |
This classy-looking 1918 Baldwin "Russian Decapod" (built for export to Russia but never sent due to the outbreak of the Russian Revolution) remained IRM's only operational steam locomotive until joined by J. Neils Co. Shay No. 5 in 2019. 1630 returned to service in May 2014 following a "1472-day" overhaul. That was the occasion for my only visit to IRM prior to Diesel Days 2022. At that time it didn't yet have the "Frisco" lettering on the cab. |

C&O 2707 hidden behind a crane boom |
Description: |
Pity what is in my opinion one of the most interesting of the unrestored steam locomotives in IRM's collection was so poorly situated for a shot. It is one of twelve of C&O's K-4 class "Kanawha" locomotives preserved. |

Description: |
This big "Santa Fe" is nicely cosmetically restored but appears to be missing a bell, and the main and valve rods are cut off. |
