WSOR 3806 ambles down the tracks towards MX crossing. If you look hard, you can still see a signal stand (inoperable) in the distance guarding the once-busy diamond that resides in the middle of Monona Bay. It's rare to see a wye movement here, and although I wasn't set up for a good shot, seeing the move was enough of a treat for me. |

Having safely set out a cut of loads on the Kohl center siding, the crew takes about a dozen more loads to be spotted in the UW-Heater plant (out of picture at right). Interestingly enough, this is the fourth grade crossing that the train has passed since leaving the yard 2-3 miles ago that passes diagonally through the middle of an intersection. Gotta love the city planning here... |

The 2053 curves around the UW Heater plant tracks and is about to cross Dayton street. It was hard to hold the camera steady- the 2053 has a very loud horn, and the engineer was laying on it heavily for this crossbuck-only crossing. Out of the shot to my left and right are many UW-Madison students darting across the tracks in front of the train. They're familiar with the prospect of being slightly delayed by the switching moves here and would rather walk in front of a moving train and it's blaring horn than wait a minute or so. |

WSOR 701 |
Description: |
Based out of WSOR's North Milwaukee yard, I found this crew switching on the Plymouth Sub just north of the WSOR shops on Villard Avenue. The maze of tracks is very interesting. Just above the rear-left corner of the locomotive is the mainline, much higher up than these spurs. The train had to negotiate a switchback with 4 cars before spotting them. Certainly, the crew must be very skilled as they pulled this move off very quickly. Wet rails and slippery grounds didn't seem to impede them at all. |

"The Bullet" (MABLT) curves around the track that will lead them to the Prairie Sub. Some switching moves at the UW Heater plant on the UW-Madison campus will busy the crew for the next hour or so. |

WSOR 2051 |
Description: |
After switching the mini-yard, the crew must come back west to clear the UW-Heater switch. Out of view to the right is Union South, and it's busy as a beehive today. About a minute after I took this photo, I had to stop the gentleman in the maroon beanie hat from trying to climb between coal cars as the train was temporarily stopped. Sure enough, the train started moving right after I barked at him. |

Here's another view of the 2051 as the conductor is inside the UW Heater plant. The three-track "Mini Yard" that can be seen in the backround is empty at the moment, but the MABLT crew will be spotting cuts of loaded coal hoppers there in a short while. |

Off to the Long John! |
Description: |
With the conductor aboard again, the crew takes a light ride west to the "Long John" siding along Campus drive. This may seem like a leisurely ride, but the countless pedestrians, motorists, bicyclists and construction workers that seem to pay little heed to the trains keep the crew on their toes. |

WSOR 3801 |
Description: |
The WSOR's 3801 is the power for the MALAM (Madison Area Local- AM job) today. I first caught them in the isthmus switching the MG&E conl plant (hence the empty hoppers in the photo), but they also had some covered hoppers and newsprint boxcars that suggest that the crew might have come from the Central Soya spur. Anyway, the crew is entering thi yard from the Cottage Grove Sub wye because a couple Hi-rails are working on a switch on the main in the E. Johnson st. yard. |
