Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Fall 2013
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
9/22/2013 - 12/20/2013
Album Info:
Most of the photographs in this album were taken in Northeast Wisconsin in the fall of 2013, plus a few from other parts of the state and neighboring states. I like watching the long, high-speed, mainline, freight trains just as much as the next railfan, but I really enjoy the opportunity to photograph some of the railroads less traveled as well.

Shawano SOO Depot -Gone!
Description:
Looking southeast along the CN rails toward a large, fresh patch of tan gravel that was, until very recently, the SOO depot which stood for about 107 years at Shawano, WI on 23 Nov. '13. I don’t know when it was removed, but the destruction appears very recent. The depot was still there in Jul. and Aug. when I went to take some photos of it.

GE 45-tonner at ADM's Oshkosh, WI Facility
Description:
A vintage GE 45-ton center cab switcher at the Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM) facility, 2550 Clairville Rd., Oshkosh, WI (physically located in Town of Algoma, Winnebago Co.), along the WSOR, former MILW, rails west of Oshkosh, WI on 30 Nov. '13. The switcher is stenciled Rock River Generating Station, a large power plant that used to operate at Beloit, WI. The grain facility was constructed ca. 1992 by Olsen’s Mill, Inc. Bankruptcy forced the sale to a group led by P. J. Martini (president of C.R. Meyer and Sons Co.) ca. Apr. ’09. That group seems to have had a convoluted and confusing history during its brief ownership of the facility; various references refer to it as Martini’s Olsen’s Mill Acquisition Co., or Olsen’s Mill Acquisition Co., or Wisconsin Ag Services, or Ag Services of Wisconsin, et al. ADM acquired the facility from Olsen’s Mill Acquisition Co./Ag Services of Wis. ca. 31 Aug. ’11. United Cooperative purchased the facility from ADM ca. Nov. ’15. I originally labeled this facility as Fox River Elevator & Fox River Valley Ethanol (formerly GB Elevator & Utica Energy) which is/was located about a mile due west of this facility. At the time I found information that suggested the two were one in the same. New information suggests they were at one time owned by the same parent organization, but operated independently.

GTW 4620
Description:
CN local heads northwest over former MILW rails as it passes through what used to be the industrial heart of Chilton, WI on 11 Dec. '13. The early village was originally named Stantonville, in honor of Moses Stanton, founder. The land was purchased by John Marygold in 1852 and he changed the name to Chilington, his hometown in England. He sent a request to the county seat, then Stockbridge, to make the name change official. A miscommunication resulted in the middle syllable being lost to history and the name became Chilton.

WC 1566
Description:
CN switcher works the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 13 Dec. '13. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

NS locomotives are rather rare in this area, so I was obligated to try to snag them when I saw them on a CN through freight paused along former SOO rails short of Winchester Rd. in Town of Menasha, WI on 17 Dec. '13. Train had two locomotives, NS 2750 pulling and NS 9302 pushing. You can also see a CN local waiting in the background on the left.
